IRELAND FAILS TO TAKE ITS FAIR SHARE OF 35 BILLION EU BONANZA - REGISTER YOUR SUPPORT HERE

Friday, April 9th, 2010

As you all know Ireland lags far behind it’s EU neighbours in the support given to public markets.   The Conference we’re hosting for WUWM (www.wuwm.org) is taking place in Dublin on June 25th and 26th.    A principal aim of the Conference will be to request the allocation of suitably located municipal space for well designed and well run public markets. As you will see from our Cockles & Mussels entry into 'Your Coluntry Your Call', we are talking about the creation of approximately 8,000 jobs and the generation of around €800,000 million annually.

Recently our President, Mary McAleese, announced the innovative “Your Country Your Call” competition.  There are two  prizes of €100,000 each which should be used to promote the idea by helping the economic situation in Ireland.   We have entered the competition and intend to use any prize money to sponsor the Conference and the public market which we will be running alongside the Conference in Dublin city centre.  The costs involved are very high however the re-education of local authorities in the use of public space and the benefits of public markets far outweigh any other considerations.

We must work together for everyones benefit.

For this reason I’m asking you to vote for our proposal (if you agree).

The steps are:

www.yourcountryyourcall.com

Click on “ENTER COMPETITION AND VOTE”

Click on “REGISTER”.  Add your name and email address.  You’ll then be directed to your email in box to login from there.

You’ll notice that each entry has a number.  Ours is D5210 and our proposal is titled “IRELAND FAILS TO TAKE ITS FAIR SHARE OF €35 BILLION EU BONANZA”.

The details you see are the blurb of the proposal.  The remainder can only been seen by the judges and gives full details of how we believe our local authorities can help build and regulate vibrant markets.

You can then click on “Support” and/or the yellow star to the right which would make it your favourite.

We really appreciate any and all support in this endeavour, both moral and financial.

Petition to the governemnt and local authorites to allocate public space for markets and trading

Friday, November 6th, 2009

You'll find a petition on the home page of this site which we're asking members to sign so that we may present it to government and local authorities in an effort to get them to recognise that market trading is a viable and productive way to make a living in the Ireland of today.  We are now a multi-cultural society and many of our new residents do not understand why a form of human intercourse that is almost as old as mankind, has been so neglected by Irish Town and City Councils. Given the enormous earning potential of retail markets we feel it’s time for a change. Low-cost air travel means that increased numbers of visitors to Paris, Madrid, Rome, Hamburg, London or Amsterdam acclaim the quality and variety of retail markets in those and many other European towns & cities; far too numerous to mention here. Ireland sadly lags far behind most of their European neighbours when it comes to official recognition of the important economic, sociological and cultural benefits that well managed street markets confer on their localities. In this context, the ultimate goal of IOMST is to positively alter official Irish attitudes towards retail street markets. In an attempt to fast-track this process of change, IOMST presented and won the bid to host the 2010 International Retail Market Conference, which will be organised under the banner of the Netherlands’ based World Union of Wholesale Markets. The 2010 conference will take place in Dublin on June 25th & 26th at a venue to be announced. Current figures show that at least 25,000 retail markets operate in the European Union, with more than 450,000 retail market traders taking space in those markets. Additionally, more than 1 million people work in those markets, generating a combined annual turnover that surpasses €35 billion. It is clear that Ireland still has a considerable distance to go, before it can match the quality and variety of the street markets that help to enhance the atmosphere and shopping experience in towns and cities throughout the rest of Europe.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION AND RETURN TO US.   ANY HELP IN PERSUADING OUR GOVERNMENT AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO DESIGNATE PUBLIC SPACE FOR MARKETS AND TRADING WILL BE WORTHWHILE.

Ireland invited to join the Common Market

Friday, October 9th, 2009

PRESS RELEASE

IRELAND INVITED TO JOIN THE COMMON MARKET

International Operators Market & Street Traders, I.O.M.S.T.; are delighted to announce that Dublin is to host the 2010 International Retail Market Conference which will be organised under the banner of the Netherlands’ based World Union of Wholesale Markets, WUWM.

Thanks to air travel, hundreds of thousands of Irish men & women now have access to what is arguably the best shopping experience in Europe…..municipally provided and managed street and covered markets. Think Portobello Road & Covent Garden; think Madrid’s El Rastro or Le Marché aux Puces de Clingnancourt in Paris’ seventeenth district, where you’ll find; who knows what? The list is huge; Albert Cuyp in Amsterdam, the riot of colour that is Campo de’ Fiori in Rome and all those markets in Marbella, Puerta Banus and Benalmadena where Irish accents are so often heard.

Now, think of what Ireland has to offer by way of a vibrant market culture; and what springs to mind? The lilting intonation you’ll hear in Cork’s English Market or the delightful St Georges Market in Belfast; perhaps. There’s not much else.

Sadly; Ireland lags far behind most of our European neighbours when it comes to official recognition of the important economic, sociological and cultural benefits that well managed covered & street markets confer on their localities.

This situation is made all the sadder by current figures, which show that at least 25,000 retail markets operate in the European Union, with more than 450,000 retail market traders operating in those markets. Additionally, more than 1 million people are working in those retail markets, with a combined turnover surpassing €35 billion.

Ireland has changed, we are now a multi-cultural society and those cultures do not understand why a form of human intercourse that is almost as old as mankind has been so neglected by our Town and City Councils. Given the earning potential; we feel it’s time for a change.

The 2010 conference is scheduled for June 24th & 25th, at a venue to be decided & will feature Irish and international speakers; covering a range of topics.

One of the main speakers will be Mr Jean-Paul Auguste, Chairman of Group Geraud; the largest retail market operator in Europe. Jean-Paul is also President of WUWM’s Retail Division.

Ciaran Cuffe, TD, wearing his urban planner’s hat will examine how best we could adapt our existing buildings and open spaces for use as market areas. Ciaran will also share his personal ‘dream-scheme’ for a municipal Dublin retail market.

Another key-note speaker will be Graham Wallace of Glasgow City Council, and the National Association of British Market Authorities, who will talk about the realities of running a modern market.
